Nevine Mahmoud, MD, MS, MS, was born overseas. When she was seventeen years old, she was accepted into the prestigious one of the oldest medical schools, where she earned her medical degree from Cairo University Faculty of Medicine, graduating with honors in 6.5 years. She completed her residency in pediatrics and obtained a master’s degree in childhood epilepsy. Prior to immigrating to the United States, Dr. Mahmoud was appointed as an attending physician at the Ministry of Health. Dr. Mahmoud completed her internship in family practice at Allegheny Health System in Pittsburgh. Before entering the residency program, she served as a visiting research transplant fellow at the Thomas Starzl Transplant Institute in Pittsburgh, where she participated in comprehensive research and didactic activities at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition. Dr. Mahmoud co-authored several abstracts and publications related to diet, nutrition, and colonic cancer.
She underwent pediatric training at Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando and completed her residency training in aerospace medicine at Wright State University’s Boonshoft School of Medicine, the oldest aerospace program, through the NASA-funded combined residency and Masters program. There, she earned her second master’s degree in aerospace medicine and completed residency training in aerospace preventive medicine. During her residency, Dr. Mahmoud received NASA funds and several scholarships, including the Space Medicine Association Scholarship Award sponsored by Dr. Jeffrey R. Davis, the International Association of Military Flight Surgeon Pilots Scholarship Award, the Jeffrey R. Davis, MD, Aerospace Medicine Endowed Scholarship, and the Wright State University-Boonshoft School of Medicine Dr. and Mrs. J. Harold Brown Scholarship in Aerospace Medicine. Dr. Mahmoud obtained a one-year waiver for accredited general pediatrics from the American Board of Pediatrics before her training in Orlando. During this period, she assisted in grant writing and was an active member of the Collaborative Obesity Prevention Project (C.O.P.P.), a grant funded by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
As a civilian contractor, Dr. Mahmoud practiced family medicine in remote environments, including Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska, and the Marshall Islands Reagan Missile Testing Army Base, where she provided medical care for pilots and managed hyperbaric medical emergencies and dive accidents. During her NASA training at Johnson Space Center (JSC) and Kennedy Space Center (KFC), she participated in various studies and led a project focused on robotic neuro-prosthesis for pilot amputees. Dr. Mahmoud has extensive experience with a wide range of diseases and conditions. Over the past decade, Dr. Mahmoud has worked as an emergency room physician, managed high acuity, critical life-threatening and trauma patients. Therefore, she is competent in handling a diverse array of conditions and office procedures within the scope of primary care. Her experience is a valuable asset to South Beach Medical Associates, potentially saving time and costs associated with urgent and non-urgent ER visits.
Dr. Mahmoud values patient-physician interaction and continuity of care, which she found lacking in her emergency room practice. She is eager to provide comprehensive clinical care, counsel patients about their illnesses, and develop individualized treatment plans. In her personal life, Dr. Mahmoud enjoys skiing, hiking, and diving. She is PADI Advanced and Rescue Diver certified, capable of performing CPR both above and below water. Dr. Mahmoud is an ACLS, PALS, and NRP Instructor and an ATLS provider. She is a former ALSO (Advanced Life Support Obstetrics) provider and has been involved in various committees, including the VA Dayton BUR Home Oxygen Committee, Blood Utilization Committee, AMSRO Scientific Paper Award Review Committee, and Space Medicine Association Website Committee. She has also chaired the Journal Club at Elmendorf and the M&M Committee at Marshall Island. Additionally, she has been a member of the Residency for Fitness Committee, Leadership and EOC Committee, Surgery Committee, Pharmaceuticals and Therapeutics Committee, and Performance Improvement Group (PIG) Committee. Dr. Mahmoud is a member of the Aerospace Medical Association (ASMA), American Medical Association (AMA), Civil Aviation Medical Association (CAMA), and is a Lifetime Member of the Space Medical Association.
