What is Botox® Cosmetic and How Does it Work?

A combination of factors can cause facial lines. It’s not just about the cellular changes that may occur, or reduction of collagen, or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment.

Repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting, or raising eyebrows cause skin to furrow and fold, gradually resulting in the formation of facial lines. BOTOX® Cosmetic works beneath the surface and temporarily reduces the underlying muscle activity that causes moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines in adults — to help them look better.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is the first and only treatment FDA approved to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe vertical bands connecting the neck and jaw.  Botox® Cosmetic is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles by a medically trained provider to temporarily relax moderate to severe forehead lines, frown lines between the brows and crows feet area of adults.  Botox® works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity that causes those lines

What are the INDICATIONS and USAGE?

BOTOX Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) is an acetylcholine release inhibitor and a neuromuscular  blocking agent indicated in adult patients for the temporary improvement in the appearance of:

1-  Moderate to severe glabellar lines associated with corrugator and/or  procerus muscle activity

2- Moderate to severe lateral canthal lines associated with orbicularis oculi  activity

3- Moderate to severe forehead lines associated with frontalis muscle activity

Why Should I Consider Botox® Cosmetic?

Years of squinting, concentrating or frowning can cause your skin to furrow, wrinkle and crease. As time passes, your skin becomes less elastic and those moderate to severe frown lines between your brows remain… even when your muscles aren’t contracting. The moderate to severe frown lines between your brows that form are often referred to as your 1′s and may make you look angry and unapproachable. Botox® Cosmetic will help prevent further creases.

Will I Still be Able to Make Facial Expressions After my Botox® Treatments?

Although the results* are visible, a treatment with Botox® Cosmetic will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you’ve “had work done.” The muscle activity that causes moderate to severe frown lines between the brows is temporarily reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows after your Botox® treatment.

How Quickly Will I See a Difference After my Botox® Injection?

Within 24-48 hours after your Botox® injection, you may notice a softening in the appearance of your moderate to severe frown lines between your brows and crows feet. The area may continue to improve for up to a month. For more frequently asked questions 

Before Botox injection, patients should avoid fish oil, flax seed, alcohol and ibuprofen to help avoiding bruising. Patients should avoid exercise, make up, sweating, swimming, steam rooms, exfoliation and facial massaging for 24 hours.
