Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)

Hormones are chemicals that are made by your endocrine glands. The glands release hormones into your bloodstream to be carried to the appropriate body part. Hormones control quite a few functions in your body such as:  

1. Metabolism
2. Reproduction
3. Growth
4. Sexual function 

BHRT is using hormones identical to what the human body makes to treat symptoms of menopause and perimenopause.  

The 3 commonly used products are Bi-est (combination of 2 estrogens: estradiol and estriol) Progesterone, and Testosterone.

Bi-est helps to alleviate symptoms of low estrogen common in menopause such as hot flashes, weight gain, brain fog, hair loss, vaginal dryness, and thinning of skin and nails.

Progesterone helps alleviate symptoms of low progesterone common in Perio-menopause such as irritability, insomnia, anxiety, low mood, irregular periods, bloating, and painful periods.

Testosterone helps alleviate symptoms of low testosterone such as decrease in sex drive, lack of passion and vitality, bone loss, and decrease in mental acuity.

Using BHRT in appropriate doses mimics normal body biochemistry and helps normalize body function.

• Breast: If there is a personal history, or very strong  family history, of breast cancer, women should not take estrogen.  However, it is very important to understand the actual risk.
• Endometrium: If  there is a personal history, or very strong family history, of  endometrial cancer, women should not take estrogen. There was no  increased risk of endometrial cancer with Hormone Replacement Therapy in  recent studies however, it is very important to understand the risk.
• Stroke: This can likely be reduced by using transdermal patches or creams rather than oral estrogen replacement.
• Pulmonary Embolism: The risk of pulmonary emboli is reduced by using a transdermal patch or creams rather than oral estrogen replacement.
