What You Need To Know About Spider and Varicose Veins

Spider veins: tiny, flat; varicose veins are large & Lumpy

Overview

  • Spider veins are superficial blood vessels that present as red, blue, or purple markings on the skin. Although commonly regarded as a cosmetic concern, their presence may reflect underlying venous dysfunction affecting blood return to the heart. In certain individuals, spider veins can serve as an early manifestation of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a progressive condition associated with leg discomfort, edema, and the eventual development of varicose veins.
  • While temporary camouflage methods such as cosmetic products or compression therapy may improve appearance, persistent vein formation or accompanying symptoms should prompt evaluation for definitive treatments that target the underlying venous pathology.

Causes and Risk Factors

Spider veins form when small veins close to the skin’s surface become weakened or enlarged due to increased pressure within the venous system. When one-way valves inside the veins do not function properly, blood can collect rather than flow efficiently back to the heart. This buildup of pressure causes the veins to expand and become visible. Spider veins most often appear on the legs, but they may also develop on the face.

Several factors can contribute to the development of spider veins, including:

  • Genetics: A family history of spider or varicose veins increases susceptibility
  • Aging: Natural weakening of vein walls and valves over time
  • Hormonal influences: Pregnancy, menopause, and hormone-based medications can affect vein health
  • Occupational habits: Extended periods of standing or sitting reduce healthy blood circulation
  •  Weight-related pressure: Excess body weight places additional strain on leg veins
  • Sun exposure: A significant contributor to spider veins on the face

Treatments

  • Sclerotherapy treatment is a safe, minimally invasive in-office procedure performed by a board-certified physician.
  • Each session typically takes less than 30 minutes, depending on the number and size of veins requiring treatment.
  •  Sclerotherapy may be recommended if the affected veins are twisted and not straight enough. Before the procedure, the treatment area is carefully cleansed and sterilized to maintain strict sterile conditions. A small needle is used to inject sclerosant, a chemical that causes the vein to spasm and clot. This type of clot is not dangerous. It is broken down by your body's natural processes making your varicose vein disappear. This medication causes the targeted veins to collapse and gradually fade as they are absorbed by the body.
  • Depending on the location and severity of the veins, different injectable solutions may be used to achieve optimal results.
  • Post Treatment:  you should continue to wear compression stockings to help prevent new varicose veins from forming and to speed recovery time.
  • Patients can return to normal daily activities and work the same day following treatment. However, certain activities—such as strenuous exercise, swimming, tanning or prolonged standing—may be temporarily restricted for a few days to support proper healing. This procedure is conveniently performed in our office and does not require anesthesia or downtime.
